Fox Animation has some heavy hitters when it comes to more adult-oriented animated series. Series like The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, and Bob’s Burgers have helped to push Fox’s Animation Domination to new heights in recent years. In fact, this quartet of series has done so well for the network that they have all been confirmed to air for multiple seasons moving forward. Unfortunately, this fact isn’t true for all of the animated series that Fox has under its umbrella, as a stealthy cancellation has arrived on the doorstep for a fan-favorite series.

The Great North director Aimee Steinberger has confirmed that the series has been cancelled. First debuting in 2021, the show taking place in Alaska had a similar animation style to that of Bob’s Burgers, though its story was quite different from that of the Belchers’. In a BlueSky post, Steinberger confirmed the bad news to fans stating, “Sadly we got the news today that The Great North is officially cancelled. I’m pretty sad about it. It’s one of a very small number of shows I’ve worked on that I genuinely loved and I really loved the whole talented crew I worked with. I feel lucky to have been there. In a world of of cynical and mean shows, The Great North was not that. The family loves and supports each other. I want to work on more shows like that. Either blood or found family.”
Will The Great North Return?
Answering fans’ responses following the cancellation news, Steinberger didn’t want to close the door permanently on the Tobin clan. When asked whether it was possible for the series to return, Aimee stated, “It’s always possible! Futurama came back like three times.” While Steinberger is clearly saddened by the loss of the Fox animated series, the director was also happy to reflect on what had been accomplished in the BlueSky thread, “Five seasons is definitely respectable, especially in the past few years’ economy.”
For those wondering how the series ended when it debuted its ninety-seventh, and now final, episode on September 14th this month, the conclusion was a bittersweet one. Main character and Tobin patriarch, Beef, played by Parks & Rec’s Nick Offerman, is chosen by the town to bring back a moose carcass to kick off a town-wide feast. While he suffers from some major complications in achieving his task, he ultimately is successful after being rescued by his fellow Lone Moose citizens. Taking the final moments to stare into the stars, Beef once again expresses his love for the “Great North,” bringing things full circle from how the animated show got its start. This might be the end for The Great North, but the ending from season five was one that both honored the series as a whole and worked as a successful crescendo to the journeys of the Tobin family.
